January 2017 Building Permit Report
Non-residential building permits in January were down 19% from the same month a year earlier, continuing a persistent downward trend. For 2017 to register improvement permits will need to pick up before spring. One major bright spot is that, while year-over-year Industrial and Institutional permits were down 15% and 91% respectively, Commercial – the largest segment of ICI construction by a wide margin – saw an 8.5% year-over-year increase in January. Meanwhile, regionally Saskatoon was down 43% percent and Saskatchewan outside of the two major centers was down 65% from the same month the previous year. Regina however, doubled their permit total from January 2016.
