• Latest Building Permits and Labour Force Reports Now Available!

    The value of building permits issued by local governments is a “leading indicator” for construction activity over the next six to twelve months. The value of residential and non-residential permits issued in April 2018 was $194 million. This is a 7% increase over April 2017 and brings the value of permits down 11% from the same four months a year ago.

    The labour market continued to perform poorly in early 2018 with a 1.3% decline in May compared with May a year ago. That brings the year-to-date decline to 0.5%. Counting heavy construction and both the residential and non-residential building sectors, employment in May was 46,900 which is down 9.0% from the 53,400 in May 2017.
